독일 SPECTRO(스펙트로)사의 휴대용 XRF 성분분석기(Handheld XRF Spectrometer) SPECTRO XSORT

(Datation & Authentication)

SPECTRO XSORT, a handheld XRF spectrometer from SPECTRO, Germany
1. Operating Principle (XRF, X-ray Fluorescence Analysis)
◆ When X-rays are irradiated onto a specimen from a device, the atoms inside the material are excited and emit the characteristic fluorescent X-rays of each element

◆ A detector on the back of the instrument senses this energy and calculates the percentage (%) of each element (Fe, Cr, Ni, Cu, Mo, Mn, etc.) present in the specimen, displaying the result immediately on the screen.

2. Main Features
◆ Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)
Suitable for analyzing National Treasures, Treasure-class cultural assets, or high-value antique art pieces, as it allows for measurement and analysis in their original form without cutting or damaging the specimen.

◆ Simultaneous Measurement of Light Elements and Organic/Inorganic Elements
Detects a wide range of elements, from light elements that form the basic framework of ceramics (such as silicon, aluminum, calcium, and potassium) to color-developing pigment elements like cobalt, iron, copper, and lead.

◆ iCAL Calibration System
The device's built-in automatic iCAL (Intelligent Calibration Logic) function minimizes calibration work even with changes in external environmental temperature, maintaining stable precision.

◆ Ultra-High-Speed On-Site Measurement
Major elemental components are displayed on the screen within seconds (2–10 seconds), enabling rapid screening of dozens to hundreds of ceramic fragments in museum storage or kiln excavation sites.

◆ Micro-Spot Camera and Collimator (Spot Size) Targeting
Supports video camera and micro-inspection area functions (e.g., 3mm/5mm spot), allowing for the detection of very fine details on the ceramic surface Precisely measure only the pattern lines or areas of specific colored pigments

3. Major Application Areas
1) Metal Component Analysis
◆ Verify the exact grade and alloy ratio of metal materials such as stainless steel (SUS), aluminum, copper alloys, and Inconel

◆ Scrap metal and recycling sorting
Fast material sorting at scrap metal collection and recycling sites

◆ Environmental and hazardous substance inspection
Detection of RoHS-regulated substances (lead, cadmium, chromium, etc.) and analysis of heavy metals in soil

◆ Mineral and precious metal analysis
Measurement of raw ore composition at mining sites, and purity analysis of precious metals such as gold, silver, and platinum

2) Analysis of Ceramic Components
◆ Chemical composition analysis of pigments and glazes
- Blue-and-white porcelain
By analyzing the ratios of cobalt, the key pigment in blue-and-white, and the associated impurities (iron, manganese, zinc, etc.), it contributes to distinguishing whether the product is Chinese cobalt blue pigment (blue-and-white) or Korean earth-blue(earthenware cobalt glaze)

- Celadon/Iron-glazed/Cinnabar
Quantifying the iron content of celadon glaze, the copper content of cinnabar ceramics, and the ratio of iron oxide in black-glazed ceramics.

- Condensed milk (lead-glazed)
measures the composition ratio of glazed pottery containing lead.

◆ Estimation of Origin and Kiln Site
Tracking the origin by analyzing the ratio of trace elements contained in the pottery body (base clay) and comparing it with soil databases of specific kiln sites (e.g., Bunwon-ri, Gwangju; Yucheon-ri, Buan; etc.)

◆ Aid for Authenticity Verification and Dating
Served as a key indicator to distinguish between ceramics produced using traditional methods and later forgeries or reproductions by checking whether modern or contemporary synthetic pigments (e.g., titanium, zinc, modern white pigments, etc.) or chemical glazes were used.

3) Component Analysis of Paintings
◆ Identification of Inorganic Pigment Types and Colors
The types of inorganic pigments used in paintings are inferred through the representative metallic elements contained within (Elemental Fingerprint).
- Red hues: Mercury ⇨ Cinnabar / Vermilion, Iron ⇨ Vermilion / Quartz / Hematite
- Blue hues: Cobalt ⇨ Cobalt Blue, Copper ⇨ Azurite
- Green hues: Copper ⇨ Malachite or Verdigris
- White hues: Lead ⇨ Lead White, Zinc ⇨ Zinc White, Titanium ⇨ Titanium White

◆ Forgery authentication and production period estimation (Date & Authentication)
Scientifically verify the era in which the illustration was created based on the invention date of a specific synthetic pigment
- Titanium white: commercialized after the 1920s
- Cobalt blue: commercialization in the early 19th century (1800s)
- Zincization: Commercialized in the mid-19th century (1830s–1840s)
(Example: If a large amount of titanium or barium is detected by SPECTRO xSORT on the surface of a work known as a 17th-century masterpiece, it is judged to be either a forgery painted later or one with extensive overpainting.)

◆ Identify any additional painting, damaged areas, and past conservation treatment history
As time passes, the elemental composition of areas repainted in modern paint by past conservation handlers differs from that of the original areas painted by the original artist, so it is possible to distinguish the conservation treatment areas as if mapping them

◆ Analysis of Ground Layer (Gesso) Components
Analyzing the calcium or barium/sulfur components of the ground layer applied to canvas or wooden boards to identify the preparation process of the base material used by the artist.
